687 children did not go to school this morning because of the collapse of the roof in an elementary school in the south of Italy (Ostuni, Brindisi). Two children were wounded and a teacher broke her leg.
The Mayor of Ostuni ordered to close the building, but the officers had already sequestered the school. Police officers and firefighters questioned eyewitnesses and took all the documents concerning the contract worth one million four hundred thousand euros for the renovation of the school, which was closed in 2010 for renovation until 2015, it opened after Christmas holiday.
“We are happy because officers and power of attorney took the matter in their hands, they started investigating and identifying the responsible – said the undersecretary of the Ministry of Education (MIUR), Davide Faraone – MIUR is investigating too in order to identify whoever is responsible. Unfortunately, we receive similar situations weekly.
Meanwhile, a report about school conditions is due for April 22. “Awareness – said Faraone – is necessary to take action firmly”.
